Evans Amp AE-100

You may remember that for a short time in the early 2000’s Evans was building the AE-100 amp, which they couldn’t keep on the shelf. Around 2003, when the “RE” (Ron Eschete) model was introduced, the AE-100 was discontinued. Due to popular demand, the AE-100 (now AE-100 GOLD Reissue) is being reintroduced as a limited run model, with numbers one through ten, and hand-signed and numbered. Instead of being a “bigger and better” version of the original, the new AE-100 GOLD is “smaller and better” – at an incredible feather-weight 20 pounds.  Dimensions: 14.5"  wide   x  13"  tall  x   7"  deep.

This may be the most compact / highest power amp on the planet. By itself it is rated conservatively at 100 watts RMS, in a combo format with a single 8 inch speaker. If you add an 8 ohm cab you will have 200 watts RMS, the same amount as the Evans flagship model JE-200. This offers incredible versatility…use the amp as-is for smaller club work (the amp’s cutting power is just incredible), or add an 8 ohm cab for larger rooms. I have used it in a club –with no extra cabinet added- with a loud organ trio and had no problem cutting through, with lots of headroom leftover.

I was personally on the design team which reintroduced the model, in a lighter-weight size but with some upgraded features. The 8 inch speaker is the latest Eminence Neodymium, with increased low end. Improved circuitry is the same that is offered in the other Evans models, including an improved “expand” (high-end EQ) feature, and improved digital reverb with greater warmth. The controls of dwell, buff, master volume, body, depth – in fact the entire electronic portion – are exactly the same as on all the larger Evans models.

  • Great power in an ultra compact design: 100/200 watts RMS
  • No-questions- asked full factory warranty
  • Boat hooks on the back for cord storage
  • Vintage styling with a retro gold grill cloth
  • Padded ‘dog-bone’ handle and oversize rubber feet
  • Two input jacks, perfect for teaching situations
  • Unique Evans tone control design allows for a wide range of tonal possibilities
  • Sherman-tank construction in a ‘work-of-art’ package.
  • Hand-made completely-USA quality
  • Collectible numbered limited run

I personally wouldn’t buy a Henriksen, Clarus, or Polytone…these amps all have a processed digital sound and get muddy at higher volumes. For just a little more you can buy the AE-100 GOLD which is probably the last amp you’ll ever need. Add a 12 inch cabinet later on and you will have all the flexibility that any gig will call for. You will never fear an organ trio again!

This hand-made amp was designed with the serious jazz player in mind – I know because I was there! Any guitarist or teacher will appreciate the incredible features available in this compact size, but it is especially well-suited for archtop jazz and acoustic players.

Recent endorsement:   "Number 9 is a winner....played on a Borys 420 with Kent Armstrong handmade PAF floater, the tone is incredibly sweet and compelling. Lots of presence, beautiful definition, velvet-like yet clear, and that "liquid" touch only tube amps are (were?) supposed to deliver... Wes would have ditched his Standel for that amp. Query whether Polytone would have been so popular had that Evans existed in the 70's and 80's. The AE-100 is heads and shoulders above my Jazzkat and Tomkat (soon to end up on eBay).
I am very pleased. I hope I can refer you more customers Jim. I will do so enthusiastically."
